Linking
Linking in the terms of the internet is the process of one website pointing a small amount of text to another webpage on the internet, either within the website or external to the website. This page about linking is going to give some vital information form a Search Engine Optimisation perspective as to why linking is such an extremely important part of any search campaign.
In the terms of a search engine spider the linking of a website is classed very similar to a person (or webmaster in the case of a website) voting for something, and marking there vote with specific words (known as anchor text). It is through online linking campaigns you will find PageRank talked about a lot. Below I am going to go into 3 different methods of online link building:
- Paid Linking: This is where you will pay a webmaster to provide you a link from his website, usually with the nofollow attribute not set, to pass on PageRank and boost your rankings. This is a highly frowned upon method within search marketing and google has recently targeted these types of links in an attempt to increase relevancy for those websites who have gained quality natural links.
- Rented Links: These are another method of linking aimed solely at improving engines rankings, whilst keeping control over the linking. Typically you will pay a set amount a month for each individual link you receive, and will be informed if you do not pay up next month your rankings will drop off at a alarming rate. This is another of the areas the search engines are targeting to increase relevancy within the rankings.
- Natural Linking: this comes in many forms, one webmaster approaching another webmaster in the same vertical offering a link exchange (reciprocal linking) to people naturally finding a webpage and linking because they feel the page found what they wanted. This is a form of linking you should be undertaking, and if you are finding you do not have enough time to find all of these links, we have staff who are thoroughly trained in approaching websites from within your vertical who will analyse a site to ensure it is of a high quality and pass on authority to your website.
