Keyword research is the foundation to any successful SEO campaign and is a critical part to your websites success. When conducting keyword research it is vitally important to consider keywords that are relevant, highly searched and have a good conversion rates. Your efforts to rank well in all the major search engines come down to many different factors and keyword research is an important stage in any SEO campaign.

1. Brainstorming Keywords – Create a list

The first step in this process is to create a list of potential keywords. Try and create a list of all the words you believe a customer would type into a search engine when trying to find your products or services. This initial stage of SEO keyword research is a great time to speak with others and try to find out what they would search for, if looking for your website. Research your competitors to see what they are targeting and try to come up with enough words to cover all the services your website offers. Remembering to target no more than 4 – 6 keywords per page.

2. Utilise keyword tools

After you have created your initial list, the next step is to determine the best keywords to target for your SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) campaign. By adding all your possible keywords into SEO keyword research tools, you can quickly learn how many users are conducting searches for that term each month. These tools will normally also suggest extra keywords that you may not have considered or synonyms that you weren’t previously aware of.

3. Consider search volumes, relevancy, conversion rates – Finalize your list

The first thing to do is use the information from your SEO keyword research to filter out the keywords that don’t receive many searches. Also consider existing analytical data for conversion rates and ROI. Filter these down until you have your finalized list. Create a mix of both broad and targeted keywords. Broad terms are important as they are provide high search volumes. Targeted terms are easier to rank for and will help to gain more relevant traffic.
