On Tuesday in Barcelona, Microsoft’s CEO Steve Ballmer provided a keynote address to the GSM Mobile World Congress trade show. During the address Ballmer and his colleagues took indirect little shots at their major competitors Apple and Google but the most interesting point they made was the inclusion of a hard coded button to be displayed on every screen of the new windows 7 phone. This button will provide users with a one-click access to search on every screen of the phone.
The main aim of this is to increase Bing’s market share for mobile search, currently the largest source of Bing’s mobile share is somewhat ironically the iPhone.
Microsoft’s phone manufacturers said that it was about time they stopped building pocket PCs as phones. The new design provides a neat and organised way of accessing your important contacts and data by using a tiled format similar to other phones on the market.
Microsoft is also going to ensure it gets the right balance between personal and business use on the phone so that it covers both areas of the market. The windows phone will have an Office Hub which syncs directly to the cloud and can be used to open and edit documents. It also allows access to a Game Hub allowing users to sync up their Xbox live profiles to their phone. Microsoft have acknowledged here that one of the successes of the iPhone was mobile gaming so expect to see the Windows 7 Phone be the closest thing to a handheld Xbox 360.
