Yahoo Japan has today confirmed that it will soon be using Google’s search engine technology, rather than Microsoft’s which is used by its strategic partner Yahoo Inc.
Yahoo Japan is 35%-owned by Yahoo Inc, however majority shareholder in the company is Softbank, which still retains a 40% stake.
Yahoo currently has a 57% market share compared to Google’s 30%, and this latest move will see Yahoo Japan use online advertising and distributions systems developed by Google. This would mean that Yahoo and Google would control almost all of the search market in the globes second largest economy.
Yahoo Japan, realizes the deal will strengthen its top position in the domestic market, will also intergrate Google’s search-linked advertisement delivery system and feed its data to Google sites.
The deal was seen by some as highlighting Microsoft’s weaker position in search.
If this Yahoo Japan and Google partnership works well, don’t be surprised to see other search engine and portal site players all over the world starting to adopt Google’s technology.
