For any Marketeers or savvy business owners asking questions as to whether Social Media Marketing is a worthwhile venture or an excuse for their staff to have an easy Friday afternoon, the latest figures published  by market researchers Nielsen answer that question!
According to their recent study, the time spent by users on Social Networking sites has more than doubled since December 2007, reaching five and a half hours per month in December 2009. This figure stood at just over two hours in 2007, contributing towards an overall increase of 82%.
There has also been a significant increase in the total number of users who log on to Social Media sites, this figure stood at 307 million at the end of 2009.
Facebook sees the largest market share, currently standing at 62% of the overall market. This is partially due to their dominance of the U.S market when they saw over 110 million unique visitors in December 2009. Despite this, Facebook could not continue its dominance in terms of market growth. The honours in this category go to Twitter with a staggering 368% grow since 2007.
Interestingly, the most prolific users of Social Media are Australians who spent an average of almost 7 hours posting and tweeting respectively.
The Nielsen data provides an insightful window into the current social media landscape. However given the growth in the sector and the rise and fall of different sites over recent years, it remains to be seen who will dominate in the new decade.
