Microsoft Increases Market Share but Google are still Top of the Search Tree

The latest data released from comScore explains global search results for 2009, with some very familiar trends, as well as some very interesting new trends.

The most obvious and familiar trend is Google retaining its lead among the search made worldwide, however the most surprising new trend is that Microsoft has increased its market share considerably.  Of the top three major search engines Yahoo got the lowest percentage change, year on year, for 2009.  Google had 87.8 billion searches in 2009 which is a 58% increase from 2008, a lo0ng way behind came Yahoo with 9.4 billion searches and a 13% increase from 2009. The main surprise of the new data is Microsoft who came in fourth place with 4.1 billion searches – a huge 70% leap from 2008 search market data.

Highlights of comScore’s study show a 46% increase in total searches made worldwide, reaching 131 billion searches in 2009, up from 89 billion in 2008.  This equates to an amazing total of 4 billion searches conducted worldwide on a daily basis.  Un-surprisingly the U.S. search market remains the biggest in the world with 22.7 billion searches made in 2009, representing a total of 17% of all worldwide searches made.  China were ranked at number two with 13.3 billion searches and not so closely followed by Japan with 9.2 billion.  The U.K. had 6.2 billion searches, up from 4.6 billion in 2008 and representing a 35% growth year on year

Google Continues its Dominance of the Search Market Share in the US for December 2009

During what could be described as an extremely busy couple of months for Google with the launch of their Nexus One mobile phone and the ongoing issues surrounding their operations within China, some reward can be seen through their dramatic increase in the American search engine market for the month of December.
Google experienced an increase in market share over its competitors, rising from 65.4% in November 2009 to 67.3% for December.  This continues the current trend of Google’s stranglehold of US searches with a staggering 52.9% difference between nearest competitor Yahoo!
It can be argued that this increase in market share has been taken directly from main competitors, Yahoo! and Bing, who both experienced a reduction in search volume going from November to December.
Bing experienced a significant reduction in terms of market share, falling to 9.9% from 10.7% in November. This could be sign that the heightened levels of interest associated with newly branded Bing could be starting to waver, raising questions concerning the best strategy for the other providers going forward into 2010. Perhaps we could be seeing an increased partnership between the two to improve on their search engine market performance.
9.9 billion searches we conducted overall in December throughout the USA, so it is apparent that the search engine market will continue to boom into 2010, however the question remains as to whether anyone will succeed in their efforts to alter the ever more cemented online search landscape.
