About Keyword Densities
It's a commonly understood and agreed principle of effective SEO that the proper use of keywords and keyword tools holds the key to not only high but also appropriate search engine ranking. Keywords are the reasons that people discover a website. They are fundamental to the search process as the science of information retrieval (including web-based search engines like Google) is based on keywords.
The engines crawl and index pages around the web and create millions of small databases each centred on a particular keyword term or phrase. This enables them allowing them to retrieve the data they need in microseconds. It's important that a site provides as many opportunities to be included in those search results as possible.
By using the many SEO tools at a webmaster's disposal (such as keyword density checkers and other keyword density tools) professional SEO consultants can work to rank sites well on critical keywords.
Despite keyword density being a less critical part of modern web search engine ranking algorithms, as more advanced methods of keyword analysis come into play, optimum keyword density for a set of key terms is still considered by many experts as vital. To this end a specific keyword tool in the form of a keyword density checker is a standard weapon in the arsenal of any professional SEO. By watching the density of the keywords on the page an SEO site can take full advantage of the various search engine algorithms.
The relevance of keywords and keyword density is essentially seen in two ways - architecturally and content-related.
Architecturally - an SEO keyword should be used in the title tag (ideally at the beginning), at least once or even twice (as a variation), once in the H1 header tag of the page and at least 3 times in the body copy on the page (sometimes a few more times if there's a lot of text content). A keyword should be included at least once in bold and ideally should also be used at least once in the alt attribute of an image on the page. An SEO keyword should be used once in the URL and at least once (sometimes twice when it makes sense) in the meta description tag.
Keyword density - the number of keywords appearing on the page also makes a difference to all of the search engine algorithms. The choice of which keywords to target on a page is often of critical importance, especially for highly competitive keywords.
There is no magic keyword density formula. Google has the strictest requirements allowing no more than 2% of each page's words as targeted keywords. A keyword density checker return of more than 2% is considered spamming. Yahoo and MSN Search have much higher keyword density tolerances, up to 5% of total words. Smart SEO practice will identify that a trade-off is necessary making sure that copy is optimised but still legible, quality English.
Links to the targeted page should contain appropriate anchor text, and support the main keyword. Supporting pages should be part of the overall theme, and provide additional keywords. Of particular importance is the need to have as many theme related pages as possible especially in highly competitive situations.
