Optimising error pages can provide large websites with an excellent return
for comparatively little effort, but the first step in this process should
be minimising the number of times an error page is displayed. Even the best
looking and most helpful error page is, at its very base level, still an error
page and some visitors will instantly be put off by this fact. Spiders, too,
will notice that it is an error page and you will not get the ranking you deserve
from links.

The Importance Of Keeping Your Links

Links are important in all SEO campaigns. Website owners and online marketers
can spend years building up an effective link profile to a handful of pages
and if that page is moved, or deleted, then the work from that link building
is essentially lost. Preventing this from happening will help to attain rankings
that have taken blood, sweat, and tears to earn.

Redirect Solutions

When you change the architecture of a website, many pages will have new URLs.
If you change the format of a site this will almost certainly happen. Left
unchecked, all links to all pages will be gone. Fortunately, there is a solution
– in fact, there are two; a temporary (302 redirect) and a permanent solution
(301 redirect).

The Redirect Of Choice

A 301 redirect is the preferred option, and is considered a “permanent” redirect.
A 302 is a temporary redirect and viewed as such by search engine spiders.
By adding a 301 redirect, you can still gain the advantages of your links even
if you move a page from one URL to another, thus ensuring that you can retain
and continue to build on your existing search engine ranking.

The wonderful thing about the Internet is its openness, although in some circumstances
this could also be considered its downfall. You can find virtually anything
out about a company or individual that you intend to work with or for, or one
whose services or products you intend to purchase. When conducting Search Engine Optimization, or
any online marketing for that matter, competitor analysis can really help you
get the best results.

Learn More About Linking Strategies

The quickest and most obvious way to learn how a website has reached the top
position for a particular keyword is to look. Use the search engines, or competitor
analysis software, to view the links that your main competitors have gained.
See if you can get links from the same websites as well as the links you have
of your own.

Consider Their Content

Take a look at their content. Consider how many pages they have, how they
link between those pages, and note anything else that you believe might be
helping them rank at the top. Take a look at a few sites using several keywords
and then apply the most popular and successful techniques to your own pages.

Using The Information

At the very least you should learn how your competitors are building their
link profile, what keywords they are targeting, what they are doing well, and
what they are not doing quite so well (every website and marketing plan can
be improved upon in some small way). Using this information it’s possible to
greatly improve your own efforts.
