10 ways to spot an SEO cowboy
Filed under: About SEO by Daniel Taylor on February 13th, 2008 @ 4:51 pm
Unfortunately there are many cowboys in the field of Search Engine Optimisation, some promise the world but deliver nothing, others get you top listings in remarkable time, which is great until you get banned by Google for using unethical methods. When it comes to unethical methods Google can be likened to the eye of Sauron from Lord of the Rings. It doesn’t catch you immediately but its always hunting, and when it does find you well say no more! So here are some tips to tell if your SEO is a cowboy or not:
They guarantee first page ranking. This is frankly laughable unless you can predict the future.
They will display one page to your user and another to the search engines. This is a form of cloaking. Very, Very Bad.
They don’t know what a 302 or a 301 redirect is. 301 is permanent redirect and 302 is temporary.
They don’t need your FTP details.
All their optimisation is off-page.
They will focus on more than 10 keywords per page.
PPC is the key to organic listings.
They will submit your site to Google
They want to use hidden text, this is criminal.
We Know Google’s algorithms, we have a friend who works their!

It’s always good to see some valuable advice like this. As we all know, there are many cowboy’s in the industry and there are always clients who have been stung by them. It’s no wonder that so many businesses are sceptical of taking on search engine optimisation services.
