Is it all about getting to the top, is first place the ultimate goal? This is a completely valid question as so many websites, blogs and forums are dedicated to Search Engine Optimisation, all professing to know the next secret to getting your website on top, thousands of specialists, and consultants trying to get you to pay them to make your site rank in the top ten.
Unfortunately many of these customers all promise the same thing, and it doesn’t take a maths genius to work out that if there are a thousand Search engine consultants, and they each have five hundred clients then that’s half a million customers all wanting the same thing. It is obvious that a thousand consultants is a gross underestimation but it purely to prove a point.
Too good to be true
Yes, there are those companies out there that will be able to improve your ranking, without the use of Black Hat methods, even if you are in a competitive industry. Unfortunately, there are a lot more of these self proclaiming specialist that will merely sell you big promises and use negative methods to temporarily get you to that coveted front page of results.
It is important for you to know what your consultants methods are, how they work and how long they take to become effective. If its sounds too good, it probably is. Remember if your company is optimising your search results then it is very likely that your competitor is doing the same thing if not more. If you are in a very uncompetitive industry then you will be able to achieve and maintain a good search result with very little effort, purely by getting the basics of SEO right.
Competitive equals details
In a competitive industry, any SEO strategy must be very particular, detailed, accurate, and continually ongoing. Optimising the search engine results is not a once off deal, it is a continually business process. As such, that continued process would have a continued cost to the company. When deciding on a strategy cost is a very important issue. Most companies are faced with two major choices, either in house or outsourced.
Many companies choose to take on consultants and outside companies to manage their internet presence and marketing strategy. This is a viable option but it is imperative to take into account that if you were to take on a staff member, or members, to focus purely on this task it may turn out to be more economical in the long run. Do not try and to split the task of SEO amongst current staff members, unless they are all familiar with the different aspects of SEO the project will not be successful.
In the end the ultimate goal is not first place, but to set up a system in which continued work will result in a continued presence on the first page as well as a well designed and useful site that customers will find easy to use and return to.
