SEO – Relevance And Authority
Filed under: About SEO by Nick on June 19th, 2008 @ 4:18 pm
Stripped down to its most basic components, SEO is all about relevance and authority. The best search engine optimization campaigns will concentrate on ensuring that both are relevant and visible to the search engines to get the best search engine results. Happily, one of the natural side effects of this, is that visitors will also perceive that your pages are relevant and authoritative, thereby improving the likelihood of converting into customers.
Relevant Page Content
Relevance is important in virtually every aspect of an SEO campaign. Page content, which includes HTML and meta tags, needs to be relevant to the keywords you are attempting to target. At the very least, you must avoid the use of irrelevant keyword meta tags and other HTML tags because this may result in a web page being flagged as spam detracting greatly from the performance of that page and your site in general.
An SEO Link Profile
Relevance also needs to shine through in your link profile. Links garnered by relevant pages are rewarded greatly by the search engines. This means attempting to find websites in the same industry and based on a similar topic to your own that are willing to provide a link to your pages. By offering relevant content this becomes more likely and so the circle continues.
An Authoritative Link Is A Good Link
When search engines compile a link profile of your site, they not only consider the relevance of each link, but its authority too. A link from a page that the search engine deems to be authoritative will be given substantial weight. Essentially, those pages that already appear at the top of the search engine rankings are those that are considered to be authority sites by the search engines and are, therefore, the most desirable when looking for inbound links.
The Happy Side Effects Of Good Search Engine Optimisation
A lot of search engine optimization can be considered best practice in increasing conversions and sales. A link from an authority site will also be viewed by human visitors as being a vote of confidence for your own page. Presuming that the page they visit is also relevant then they will be more susceptible to the message you are trying to promote and the action or actions that you want them to take.
Never Lose Sight Of The Most Important Factors
Regardless of the methods used to build links, and regardless of the type of content you offer, relevancy and authority will always be the two most important factors to be considered. Combining highly relevant content and links with authoritative recommendations from other web pages will ensure that your site is indexed for the most relevant keywords and performs well in the search engine results.
SEO Benefits
Actual search engine optimisation needs to consider many different factors, both on page and off page. While it’s obviously important to find good sources of links and to offer appealing content, it is vital that an SEO never loses touch of the two basic ingredients of search engine optimization success – relevancy and authority. By providing these in bucket loads, a site will perform better not only in search results but in site conversions, sales, and performance.
