Search Engine Submissions - The Truth
Filed under: SEO Submissions by Daniel Taylor on August 7th, 2008 @ 3:54 pm
Submitting web pages to search engines is a service that you can find on numerous
pages and in various guises. Some services will offer “comprehensive” services
that submit to hundreds or thousands of search engines and charge very little.
Completed using automated software, this age old routine brings very little,
if any, benefit to an SEO campaign any longer.
The SEO Technique Of Yesteryear
Search engine submissions were once the chosen way to inform search engines
that your website existed. After a period of waiting, the search engines would
deploy a spider to your site in order to crawl the pages, as long as they knew
you existed. However, search engines and especially the spiders that they use
to crawl the web have become far more advanced making search engine submissions
virtually obsolete.
Getting Indexed Through Links
There are many alternative methods of letting spiders known about your website.
The most commonly used is through the acquisition of an inbound link. Presuming
that the page providing the link has been indexed then your page will also
be indexed the next time a spider passes through the link.
Getting Indexed Through Sitemaps
The major search engines each offer their own Webmaster tools, or similarly
named services. By creating a sitemap and adding this sitemap to these services,
it is again possible to get indexed in next to no time.
Search Engine Submission
Search engine submissions are an outdated and defunct SEO technique. Companies
and websites still have the automated submission software, however, and so
they will happily sell you the service even at a reduced price. Because they
usually inform you that you’ll have to wait weeks for inclusion this allows
for spiders to naturally find their way to your site anyway. Using links and
submitting sitemaps are more accurate and more beneficial methods of getting
your pages noticed by the search engines.
