Keyword research is vital to every company’s SEO campaign. It’s one of those fundamentals that even the highly argumentative SEO community agrees on. It’s not that difficult to understand. People will use all sorts of words to describe your business, and you need to know what they are.

A lot of companies are held back by their inability to think outside of the box. This is one of the reasons consulting with SEO experts comes in very handy. An outside perspective can mean the difference between failure and success. Think of it: using the keywords already known to your business, it is possible to achieve a first-page ranking for your brand name. Using all of the keywords known to your business, as well as the ones used by your competitors, the ones used by people who can’t spell and slang terms, you can achieve first-page ranking for everything to do with your business.

People will rarely be satisfied with one search on a topic. The amount of inaccurate information all over the net has led to a culture of cross-referencing when it comes to searching. Even if they find valuable information after their first search, most internet users will re-phrase their search in order to glean as much information as possible, increasing the likelihood of sifting out some facts.

The tendency of internet users to practise complicated search behaviour has even been the subject of academic research. Although there are still some people out there who will put in a single search term for a single search item, the majority of searches are complex and difficult to predict. They cannot be answered with a simple A + B = C kind of search engine optimisation strategy.

Keyword research can often be a lot more psychology than statistics. Three years out of four, a person searching with the term ‘Olympic games’ is just as likely to be after information on the history of the games as they are for information on a specific year. However, when the next set of games is coming up, the majority of the searches will be for that year’s specific set of games. When the information on the basic ‘Olympic games’ search turns up a lot of historic pages, the second search people will do in this case will be ‘Olympic games 2012′. Wouldn’t it be nice, though, if your page on the 2012 Olympics came up first with the first search people tried?

Each business has to know what search terms apply to their site at any given time. They also need to know the related terms and the various ways in which these terms will be used. For help with keyword research, you can access our excellent resources at SEO Consult. When it comes to implementing your site’s keyword list, however, keep in mind the variations that are likely to pop up. Reordering, foreshortening, and re-punctuating are just some of the simple things you can do to increase your site’s keyword diversity.
