Working long tail into your SEO strategy

Search engine optimisation is a complex enough process when your keywords consist of one or two words only. At least at this level, guesswork can get you places and your strategies can be implemented easily. When the terms you’re targeting consist of three or even more words, the process can be a lot harder to get your head around.

Businesses and SEO experts alike are scrambling to understand how to work long tail keywords into their search engine optimisation strategies. A lot of mistakes have emerged from ignoring the basic requirement of any SEO strategy. This is, of course, the provision of high quality content.

Quality content is one of the foundations of good SEO. Ensuring that your site provides a valuable experience to users is smart on two levels. The first is, of course, for the users themselves. Users are more likely to return to a site that has provided them with a quality experience. The second is because of the search engines. It’s well known that quality plays a major part in the way your site is ranked in the search engine results pages. Providing lots of low-quality content is more likely to do your ranking damage than keeping your content amount smaller.

The need for high quality content presents a problem when it comes to optimising for long tail keywords, because of the sheer amount required. As long tail keywords are more specific, it’s likely your site will need to optimise for a larger number of them to boost your overall traffic. Long tail keywords tend to encourage specific traffic that will benefit your business in the long term, but you need to address many more individual users than with shorter keywords.

Not many businesses can afford to generate the volume of content needed to really address long tail keywords. You have several options:

Generating content with software
Some companies opt to produce content using writing software. Such software takes the required information and generates sentences that include the information in a formulaic way. This can produce readable and understandable content very cheaply. Unfortunately, this content is rarely of much value to your users. Depending on your target users, this strategy may be very obvious and damage your reputation.

Professionally written content
This is an option many businesses go for when it comes to SEO in general. Having a professional write your content is one way to guarantee it will be relevant and well-written. When it comes to large volumes of content, however, many businesses shy away due to the investment needed. There are ways to obtain cheap content and your SEO consultant may be able to give you some advice.

Content generated by users
This is a great way to ensure a steady flow of content and also a way to perform a little keyword research as you go. Users are generally keen to participate on a popular site and things like open product reviews, forums, comments sections and even article publication may prove beneficial. This will not work so well if your site is just starting out, but can help build a following and a sense of community if you carefully combine professionally written content with user-generated content in the early stages.

Many companies approach their SEO firm for high quality content and you can talk to us at SEO Consult about your content needs.
