Building Authority – How can it be done?

Authority can be seen as the way in which search engines measure the quality of a website. The priority of search engines is to bring their users the most relevant and useful results to their search. In order for major search engines to include your website in their top results, they need to trust that your site will contain what the user is looking for and this trust that your website is a relevant and useful match has to be built over time.
Search engines do seem to like websites which have been around for a while. The older the domain, the likelier the website is to be a useful source of information for the user and also a reputable organisation. Age is only one factor however and when considering Search Engine Optimization, there are several other things which can be done to build trust and authority with the engines.

Links pointing to your website from other quality websites with good authority themselves can help to build your own Website Authority. The links need to be with industry relevant websites, preferably those considered to be industry leaders and/or experts in your particular field. This shows search engines that this website trusts yours enough to recommend you to their own users. Sites with god authority find themselves being spidered by search engines more often, fresh content is picked up by them more quickly and this can all help towards a move upwards in the search engine results pages.

Content is a major part of the process of Building Authority. Competently written copy, well laid out, easy to understand and informative, is a huge part of many Search Engine Optimization methods because both users and search engines love a well-written website. Integrating a blog which can build into a comprehensive industry resource, with clearly themed catagories and use of targeted keywords, can be a great way of adding that good content regularly and helping to build authority.

Another useful method is through social media websites such as Digg, stumble upon etc as the high ranking that these websites enjoy is reflected upon your own site when the two are linked by one of your blogs or articles. Not only do the quality links and social media connections help to build authority, they also help to drive more traffic to your website.

Submitting your website to appropriate directories can be a method by which to build more authority for your website. Although there are differing opinions on the best way to do this, at SEO Consult, we believe the most useful links are ones to and from industry related sites, so it makes sense to carefully choose the best quality relevant directories to submit your website to rather than simply submit to every one possible.
A good SEO company can develop a dynamic strategy with you to start building the authority of your website and to maximise your online profile.
