Inbound linking is possibly the single most important factor regarding Search Engine Optimisation.
Google, Yahoo! and MSN all view inbound links as vote of popularity, hence the need for more and why link baiting seems to be on everyone’s lips that’s involved in the World Wide Web. To summarise there are 3 very different ways of achieving backlinks to your site, each of which with a different cost.
Directories, Paid and Unpaid
Directories are a great way of building up lots of links in a short space of time, there are lots of free directories which don’t hold much authority but combined can gather a lot of links. The paid directories are worthwhile but very expensive, these are difficult to get accepted into and therefore hold plenty authority.
Social Networking
Social networking is by far the most popular form of acquiring links, and is gathering momentum as the main reason for internet use. Sites such as Myspace, Facebook, Digg and Stumbleupon are becoming the wealthiest sites that the major software suppliers and search engine are squabbling for. Again to have inbound links from these is a very successful way of getting your site noticed.
Link Farms
Outsourcing a linking strategy will normally result in some form of a link farm, this is where websites that relate to your suggested keywords will be approached and requested to link to your sites, these can be worthwhile but when paying per link will mean you have to watch where your money is going very carefully.
Conclusion
In conclusion all three areas are worth pursuing, but when spend is a major factor, I would suggest getting a blog on your site and writing some good articles to get picked up through your RSS feed. Add these to all the major networking sites on a daily basis and you’re sure to build up authority for your site.
