There are no cutting corners if you’re aiming to achieve successful Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) results – and no guarantees of 100% success either.

Search Engine Optimisation techniques and skills are enhanced by having an understanding of your target market and your competitors, plus a tangible method of ongoing Search Engine Optimisation Reporting and monitoring. Long after you’ve planned your SEO campaign, you’ll need to implement your analysis and monitoring strategies from which to maintain and improve your SEO results.

Identify your audience

Identifying your target market and making your website accessible to them to buy your product or services is vital to SEO. If your website’s live and you haven’t analysed your target market then your SEO campaign could flounder. Check how your competitors rank in search engine results and see how you rank alongside them. Is your website being ranked by search engines? What Search Engine Optimisation methods do you need to apply to compete against them?

Frequent monitoring

Frequent monitoring and tweaking is key once you’ve applied SEO Techniques. This allows you to gauge the impact of your SEO campaign and adjust areas according to the need. Monitoring SEO should be an ongoing process that keeps evolving. To ensure you maintain momentum of your SEO campaign you should consider:

o Review traffic to your website: Try and get a monthly traffic report from your website’s host company. These reports should provide information about referrals from search engines. This allows you to see how various SEO techniques impact your page ranks.
o Review your keywords: Continually check your chosen keywords in search engines to see how your website ranks. Adjust these according to your page ranks, and always check how your competitors are ranking.
o Content updates: It’s worthwhile to refresh and update your website content at least once a month to ensure it’s still relevant to search engines.
o Incoming link checks: Are your incoming links on other websites still working? Are these websites still relevant to yours? Keep a list of potential websites you could propose a link swap.

SEO reports

These reports give you a valuable insight of the online activity around your website. They also give a detailed analysis of your sites weak areas and provide details of the steps you can take to improve them.

Various SEO companies provide SEO reports and these are an ideal tool to help you develop your marketing plan and build further SEO campaigns. Statistics within the report outline your competitors, and give leads on preferred keywords and key phrases you should use to attract potential online consumers.

Your checklist

By now you’ll realise Search Engine Optimisation is not a once-off action that instantly gets your website into top page ranks. It’s an ongoing process that requires a hands-on approach in various areas. In striving towards improved SEO results you’ll need to:
o Know how your competitors rank in the search engine results
o Understand and engage directly with your target market
o Have an in depth prescription of your website’s areas of improvement
o Frequently review and tweak your website
