Appreciating Meta Tags

What are Meta Tags?

Meta tags are more important that what they are given credit for. They are hidden HTML code that gets placed on webpage’s and the purpose thereof is to let search engines know what your site is about. It will provide a title, a brief description and keywords of your website. This information allows these search engines such as Google or Yahoo to categorize your website.

If you have used a search engine and looked up a keyword, a list of sites would have appeared. You would have probably seen a title and a brief description about that site, and based on this, you would have decided which website to visit. This title and description are Meta tags and not only are they useful to search engines for classification purposes, but are also helpful to search engine users.

The Composition Of Meta Tags

There are three Meta tags that are important namely, the Meta title, description and keywords. They all work in unison to target traffic and to be successfully categorized.

Looking at the Meta Title, it usually should consist of no more than 10 words and should contain keywords and descriptive words. Remember that this line will probably be the first thing the target market reads, so it should be informative and precise. Research has shown that search engine users will scan through a search engine results page and often only read the title to establish whether it is the site they are looking for. Many times, users will only read the Meta description before entering the site to ascertain themselves that it is the correct site.

Regardless, Meta descriptions are just as important and should sufficiently include all keywords. However, it should not be flooded with these key phrases but contained appropriately and sparingly. The Meta description needs to give enough information about a website. It should be brief but concise and informative.

The most important aspect of Meta Tags is the Meta keywords. They ensure that traffic find your site.

How to write Meta Tags

The key to using Meta Tags is writing really excellent titles, descriptions and keywords. Knowing the importance of Meta Tags, when implementing them one has to take notice of the following. Starting with the Title tag, this may be your only chance to motivate users to visit your site and catch their attention.

The same goes for the description tag. Look at them like miniature advertisements to sell your website. When writing Meta descriptions, think of what you, as a user would like to see. Does it contain the keywords that you are searching for, is it precise and to the point or is ambiguous and confusing. Focus on the message you want to convey to your target market.

Lastly, Meta keywords require research! To know what your visitors are searching for gives you better ranking on search engine results pages. Make sure to study which keywords are most searched for and how much competition is out there for the same key phrases.
