Common SEO Jargon

Alt Tags: Alt tags contain keywords which can improve a search engine ranking of the page for specific keywords

Crawler: also known as spiders it is software that visits a website in order to index it.

Direct Hit: A system that tries to measure the relevance of each site.

Directory: A site which contains links to other sites that are organized into various categories

Doorway Page: Page specially created to get a high ranking.

Dynamic Content: Based on database information which changes automatically.

Frames: Is an HTML technique. This allows site owners to display two or more pages in the same browser.

Hallway Page: Contains links to doorway pages.

Heading Tags: Is a paragraph, displayed in bold typeface.

Hidden Text: This is text that is visible to a search engine, but invisible to humans.

Image Map is an image which contains one or more invisible regions which are lined to other pages.

JavaScript: Commonly used in web pages, it is a scripting language. Most search engines battle with indexing sites built in this code.

Keyword: Used in a search.

Keyword Frequency: Points to how many keywords appear on a page or in a section of a page. Repeating too often can lead to penalties.

Keyword Prominence: Tells you how close to the start of an section o f a page in which a keyword appears. The closer to the start, the more improvement in rankings.

Keyword Weight: Shown as a percentage, this tells how many keywords appaear on a page in relation to all the other words.

Link Popularity: If a link is popular it can aid in the popularity of the rankings of the site it is linked to.

Meta Description Tag: This is present in the header of a web page and is used to describe the contents of a page.

Robot: Same thing as a spider or a crawler.

Robots.txt: Is a text file which is present in the root directory of a site and which is used to control pages that are indexed by a robot.

Spamming: Any technique used in SEO which degrades the quality of results produced

Search Engine: Software which searches for information and returns with information regarding sites which provide this information.

Search Engine Placement: This is the practice of attempting to make sure that the web gets high rankings in the search engines. It is also known as search engine positioning.

Stop Word: Stop word is a word which appears often on a web page but has does not have its own significance. Examples are ‘the’, ‘of’, and ‘etc’.

Title Tags: These are what is known as the contents of the Title Tag and are what is displayed by the browser at the top of its window. They can increase search engine rankings.

URL: The proper name is ‘Uniform Resource Locator’. They are used to specify the address of a web sites or a web page. Including an important keyword in a URL can improve search engine rankings.
