Inbound links and Search Engine Optimisation

Inbound links, in links, back links, no matter what you call them you can’t get far away from the topic when discussing SEO. I think it’s important that anyone involved in Search Engine Optimisation should not only understand what there purpose is but how to get the most out of a Link Campaign. Please feel free to make your opinion in the comments section below.

The Purpose of Linking in Search Engine Optimisation

The whole reason for linking can be summed up in one word – Authority. Authority is pretty much the sole factor to Search Engine Optimisation success or failure and the reason, Google believes in it more than anything else. A site with authority is a site that is trustworthy and resourceful, this combination has made Google the force it is today, highly relevant results for any given subject. Ultimately you want your site to be trusted and resourceful; the resourceful part is no science, write as much content on the keyword you want to be top for and spread it throughout your site, but the trustworthy part is where we come back to the need for back links.

One link from a respected site can pass on enough authority to get you to the top of the listings for a competitive term. A respected site is one that has already built up authority through domain age and will have a good Page Rank (PR3+). The link will pass on its authority and suggests that you are trustworthy also, it really does act as a vote of confidence. This link also passes Page Rank which is basically Google’s measure of authority.

Bad links

Quality back links are hard to come by, and when you do find one the likelihood is you will have to pay accordingly. Many link suppliers will offer fantastic deals but in truth the quality of the back link is none existent. Be aware for links from sites in bad neighbourhoods, because this will have an opposite effect, associating you for a crime you didn’t commit. Also a site with over 10-15 external links will not pass on much value, ideally you want a link from a site with only a few external links to gain as much of this authority as possible.

Directory Links

Other methods of linking are through Directories, the Yahoo! Directory is a high Page Rank, high authority paid submission directory and should be a definite consideration for any site. This in turn will provide a link from a page relative to your industry and could also feasibly send traffic to your site. There are also thousands of free directories which provide little benefit but when accumulated together may raise you from a Page Rank of 0 to a Page Rank of 1.

Inbound links and inbound link campaigns are the one of the ways to get a good ranking within Google and can be compared to a vote for your site. The link popularity of a site is one of the key factors taken into consideration by the search engines while evaluating the popularity of a site.

  2. Jeff Swope says:

Inbound links are an important element in a comprehensive search engine optimization strategy. Links from other sites are valuable channels of visitors to your website. 3. Scott Baker says:

Inbound links to a site will be counted as value adding links. Links coming in from related websites with good quality content would be placed at higher value than links coming in from poor quality websites will raise the possibilities of search engines identifying your website as a spam site and penalize you by removing your site.

  4. Charlie Cory says:

Bad neighborhood links are those sites that link to your site that are penalized or banned by Google. Those sites that use unethical techniques like keyword stuffing and duplicate contents, lack any original or unique content, hidden text links, doorway pages, machine generated pages and many more.

  5. Jerry Holmes says:

Search engine directories organize links under various categories and sub-categories. Another benefit of getting your link included in web directories is that your link is indexed by the search engines quickly. Search engine crawl with the web directories and first crawl all those links present in the directory.
