Is Your SEO Consultant Selling You A Dream?

Trust the numbers
Everybody wants to have their site ranked high on any and all search engines. Fortunately there are companies out there that specialise in exactly that. Unfortunately there are thousands of those companies, promising the same outcome to hundreds of thousands of clients, who all seek higher search engine rankings. So it is abundantly clear that creating a website that achieves instant high rankings is virtually impossible.
If a consultant is telling you that they can make your site number one in all search engines by the end of the week, they are lying! If they achieve this it’s a miracle, and if you maintain that ranking it’s an even more divine miracle. The fact is designers or consultants are not magicians and cannot simply say pull high rankings out of a hat. SEO is a detailed and long term project, when done correctly.
There are a thousand sites that will explain to you that there are short cuts to higher rankings, these are generally unethical and considered “Black Hat” SEO. These methods promise quick and effective elevation in rankings. However true this may be, the long term damage to your sites reputation will be guaranteed. These methods are short cuts for a reason, because they don’t last long, because they are not legitimate methods of improving your website. The point of your website should not just be higher rankings in a search, your site needs to have a purpose and a benefit to the users.
Don’t be fooled by big numbers
Creating a site that will in the long term be ranked highly is not impossible, and in the end it will bring in more effective traffic. The fact is many over-night SEO’s promise great rankings and hundreds of hits a day. The reality is they can produce those numbers but they don’t mean anything.
It does not matter that you have 100 users on your site every day, unless those users are active or even better if they are converted from users to customers. Conversion numbers are the real numbers you should be looking at improving not the hit rate of your site.
Choosing the right company
There are legitimate companies out there that will improve the way your website works, improve its applicable links, and insure useful, informative content, that will satisfy the search engines and more importantly will satisfy the your users. So when you are looking for a SEO company, first search the net to find a background on that company, find out what other users say about the company and its results.
Online social communities are great resources for finding worthwhile companies, because they are suggested and rated by other users. Once you have found several companies, do a little research of your own and put together some realistic goals and some questions. Then get in contact with the consultants. If it sounds over the top to good, then be very careful. Use logic and your own research to make informed decisions.
