PageRank is one of those things that new Webmasters and anybody undertaking
DIY Search Engine Optimization tends to get a little too wrapped up in. The Google Toolbar PageRank,
in particular, is a misleading and outdated numerical representation of your
overall link profile. As such, it gives no indication of how well you are or
will perform for your chosen keywords or how much traffic you will receive.
Why PageRank Means Very Little
Websites with very low, or even no PageRank, can rank highly in the results
for their chosen keywords. These sites, despite having a PR of 1 or 2 will
still get targeted traffic from Google. In contrast, there are websites and
pages that have large PR 8 rankings that feature highly in very few search
results and get little traffic as a result.
Measuring Your Search Engine Optimization Success
In terms of measuring Search Engine Optimization success, PR is not a factor. The traffic that is
driven from the search engines is the most important statistic. Individual
keyword performance and how high you rank for those keywords are also important
factors. They’re certainly well worth obsessing over when compared to Google’s
Toolbar PageRank figure.
Obsessing Over Statistics And Data
The ideal statistics and figures to really obsess about are traffic levels,
conversion levels, sales, and profits. It’s these that determine the success
and extended success of any Search Engine Optimization project. By paying less attention to building
up your PR and more attention to improving these other statistics you will
be more likely to succeed in creating a profitable website.
