The Future of Search

SEO is not an exact science because of the techniques it uses in promoting web site pages.  They constantly change and evolve due to the search engines quest in refining their algorithms so that they can deliver accurate results.  They also refine their algorithms in the ever present fight against spam.

What this means to someone using SEO as part of their marking campaign is that they will never, ever be able to understand how algorithms work, in fact, they are a closely guarded secret amongst search engines, for good reason.  Search engines operate at a high complex level which includes their algorithms and processing techniques and many key players in SEO attempt to probe search engine their algorithms by testing different coding techniques, all the while furiously disagreeing on what the best approach to SEO actually is.

Tightening Algorithms

The initial reasoning behind algorithms was to identify and attempt to stop, or at least minimise, black hat techniques which try to ‘trick’ search engine spiders into recognising what is not really there.  These same algorithms are now making people more careful in their approach to SEO lest they become susceptible to their strict rules and regulations regarding spam filters.  Nobody wants to find themselves banned and certainly don’t want to find their reputation in tatters.

Such a thing happened in 2003 when Google changed their algorithms, leaving people wondering what on earth was happening!  Even today experts disagree on what happened, some believe that Google changed their algorithms to include filters against anchor link text which resulted in devalued link relevance.  What happened is that some sites completely disappeared, while others failed to show up in search phrases.

One affect of their update, or change, to their algorithm was a proliferation of directory sites and link farms.  Google corrected their flaw and their results are now accurate.    As search engines themselves issues the guidelines to SEO, what came out of this change was that those people who thought dubious SEO techniques were reliable found out the opposite.  The message is ‘Don’t go there, it is not wise and you will get found out and penalised’.  However, some innocent parties got caught in the aftermath which caused them some anguish.

Technologies that are emerging

The phenomenal growth of the World Wide Web and the benefits it has shown has nurtured a better understanding in academic and business circles, who themselves have had a big hand in shaping the Internet as we know it today.  The web has become an efficient, affordable and available source of information as well as a place to conduct business.  Because of this it became important that the mechanisms needed to categorise, store and retrieve information and knowledge had to become more than simple.

The power of computers has aided more accurate search engine results in part due to algorithms which are responsible for indexing, processing and delivering information.

The rise in computing power has enabled more accurate search engine results because the heuristics and later algorithms responsible for indexing can process and deliver the information faster.  These dynamic initiatives are accepted gladly by SEO marketers and SEO is sure to adapt and respond to any request for a more reliable and more relevant search results.  Search engines will keep refining their processes to ensure a marketing edge and in the process the opportunity for algorithm exploitation will disappear.
