Why Bother With SEO Keyword Research?
Filed under: Search Engine Optimisation by Daniel Taylor on November 9th, 2008 @ 3:18 pm
Let’;s be honest, if you run and manage your own website and online business then you instinctively know the keywords that your visitors use to find websites just like yours don’t you? After all, you’ve probably conducted your own searches on the Internet in order to consider your competitors and see how they have set up their own websites. Unfortunately, even if this method of keyword selection leads to a couple of relevant keywords within your industry, the chances are that they are highly competitive keywords and that you would miss out on many other beneficial SEO keywords by simply targeting these.
SEO Keywords
SEO keyword research is a hugely important part of the SEO process that can be used to identify many different keywords and each of them will be targeted to your own website as well as the products or services that you offer. It can be used to highlight niche keywords that have comparatively little competition and that you might not have otherwise considered. The chances are that if you use the search terms you consider the most relevant without conducting keyword research then they could be extremely difficult to compete for.
SEO Keyword Research Software
There are many tools and applications available to assist in the identification of SEO keywords. The search engines themselves offer some of these tools while free applications offer as many features and as good a set of data as the commercial packages that are also available. Using these applications really will benefit your SEO keyword research because they provide invaluable information such as the number of competing sites, the level of monthly traffic that can be expected for a term, and even related keywords.
Implementing Keyword Research Results
Once you have conducted your SEO keyword research you will need to implement your findings into your SEO campaign. Keywords are used on the page of your website as well as in link building and throughout the life of an SEO campaign. Considering that an SEO campaign should be an ongoing project this makes them a hugely important part of your SEO efforts. Add them to the content of your pages and use them in the anchor text of links that you generate for each page in order to enjoy the best possible SEO results.
Using Your Own Keywords As A Place To Start
While using your own keywords without conducting research i unlikely to generate the best possible results, they can be used as an excellent place to start. You do have understanding of your own market and you should have a fairly clear idea of the terms that your potential visitors use when searching the Internet for relevant websites and information. Coupled with the fact that most SEO keyword research software will identify related keywords this means that your own keywords are a truly beneficial place to start your SEO campaign from it’s just that they alone will not give you the best sources of SEO traffic.
