Putting all your ‘eggs in one basket’, so to speak, has always been advocated as being unwise, and in this case applies to your SEO campaign.
SEO as a Marketing Tool
Having a successful website is not directly related to the amount of visitors you receive. What does make your site successful is if it is attracting visitors who want to do business with you whilst they are there. So it is clear that finding your site on the web is not enough.
SEO will help you attract visitors, especially if you are highly ranked. The onus is on you however to target which traffic you want and invite them in. And this can only be done with marketing. A successful SEO campaign is definitely one form of marketing, and if you have done your homework and chosen your keywords to match those who are surfing the web, chances are you should attract sales.
Another form of Search Engine Optimization which can help attract traffic to your site is link building which is a form of marketing which link sites, whether it be banners or email links, from one site to another. This is how people today travel the web, and all it requires is one click to find what they are looking for.
Why use other Marketing Tools?
But is does not make business sense to allocate your entire marketing budget to just one form of advertising. It does however; make financial sense to use other available marketing tools in order to attract target audiences in different ways. Not everyone uses the internet, for different reasons, so by not using other marketing sources, like the media, will lose this demographic. And even if people are internet savvy, search engines may not be the best way to attract substantial traffic to your site, so getting your website address out to in market place may require a different form of advertising.
Each keyword or phrase used during a search on any search engine will bring up thousands, of not millions, of sites that are also competing for a place in the first ten pages. With odds like these it does not make sense to focus on only Search Engine Optimization as a form of marketing, and even linking has its value only in the amount of times it gets used.
Time and Attention
Building a steady stream of traffic to your site means that you have to advertise in every way you can which requires time and effort on your side. Consider using directories or exchanging links with numerous other sites. Perhaps you might consider starting a Pay per Click campaign, or asking that articles on your product be included in other site’s newsletters on their sites. You might also consider having your site reviewed by a review site. But there are many more promotional methods at your disposal, all of which are geared toward promoting your site, your product and ultimately your financial returns.
