On-page optimisation is the amendment of matters that occur within the HTML code, including things like Meta tags, content, site architecture, URLs and sitemaps. Once you have had your site Search Engine Optimised it is sometimes difficult to know where to go from here. If you stand still for too long at this point your site will not improve to anywhere near the rate it could if utilised to full potential.

There are a number of factors that all fall under the Off-page umbrella, this is various methods of promotion which will boost awareness and exposure of your website and brand.

Directory Submission – There are literally thousands of free of charge and paid directories around the internet. These are useful for two reasons, they generate added exposure and traffic, secondly they automatically give you a link from the category that you’re relevant to, gaining an good quality inbound link. If you can get in DMOZ (free) and Yahoo Directory ($199) this will boost the power and authority greatly.

Press Releases – An online press release is very similar to that of an offline one, but instead of using the media to create a buzz, you encourage online communities and social bookmarking sites to do this for you. If you make this a worthwhile read this will naturally create links and interest in your site.

Paid Links – Generally frowned upon by the purists, paid linking can be a successful method of achieving inbound links from relevant and authoritative websites. There are thousands of link suppliers out there, but be very careful about which one you decide to use. Most will generate mass links from bad neighbourhoods, free for all websites and irrelevant websites. Once you find a good one, keep hold of them.

Social Networking – This is something that is still in its infancy but commands a lot of power from the major search engines. Social Networking on sites such as Facebook, Myspace and Bebo have become hugely successful within the last 18 months and therefore has a big influence on the search engines. The more users each network has, the more of a resource it is deemed to be – ultimately what Google and the others are looking for with every search.
