What is a SERP?
SERP stands for Search Engine Results Page which is a place every website owner desires to be on, the higher up the list, the higher their website is considered in importance by the search engine. The websites shown these pages are as a result of a query that a user has entered in their search for specific information.
It is the objective of every online marketer to get the high rankings in search results. Most website owners will go to almost any length to get them.
Why are some sites getting higher rankings?
Even though your site may have high rankings, your competitor may be better ranked than you. There are several reasons which may account for this. The object is to get better rankings than they have, but be cautious when contemplating knocking them out of their position.
There are some things to consider first. Even though they may have higher rankings does not mean they are doing more business, or making more money. They may in fact be paying a great deal of money and even this may not guarantee that they are attracting a better quality of prospect to their site.
Your site may have fewer links than they do on their site and links, as we all know, are important to search engines. They validate a sites relevancy. What you may need to do is start a campaign in order to increase your links which will help search engines take more notice of your site, in the process giving you better rankings.
You may also have redundant pages flagged as ‘spam’ because you have a host of listings on various search engines. Spam translates as “pages that deliberately trick the search engines into delivering inappropriate, redundant, or poor-quality resultsâ€. If you eliminate these domain listings, you should increase your rankings.
However, moving from good rankings to great rankings can cost you and may even be more expensive than the ranking actually warrants. If you are already in the top 10, it may be a good idea to calculate what it will cost you to get ranked in the top 5. Perhaps it is better to be satisfied with your current rankings especially if you are doing good business. If you keep moving ahead you should stay close to the top rankings.
What is the cost of getting top ranks?
There are so many things to factor into this question and it is difficult to calculate precisely, but there are some elements that can affect costs.
If you are in a competitive market, your competitors will be doing what they can to get higher rankings in a search engines landing page. While this can complicate matters it doesn’t make your task impossible. You will need to be more creative and have more patience.
If you have chosen popular keywords you will face stiff competition to get them. A good SEO copywriter can work around this type of problem though. Time is needed and time is money. SEO experts predict that it takes at least six months of tweaking to get good results.
If your website is dynamic or complex it makes it harder for search engines to work with it as all they care about is text. Adding lots of graphics and animations may earn your site awards but they will get in the way of a search engine determining how relevant your site is.
