Little things are important to SEO

There are so many things to remember when it comes to SEO. You need to keep abreast of rule changes and techniques, track keywords and keep an eye on what competitors are doing. This is not counting the physical work you need to put into your site to keep it optimised.

Lots of businesses forget about some of the little things in SEO. One of the best ways to keep up is to have a consultant on board, and you can always talk to our experts at SEO Consult about your ongoing search engine optimisation plan. Every business, however, needs to be able to monitor their site’s optimisation strategy over time. Here are just a few things to keep in mind:

* Remember the page-fold concept. In newspaper terms, below-the-fold stories get less attention because they are not in the upper half of the broadsheet. In terms of your website, anything a viewer has to scroll down for is below the fold. This is important to keep in mind when developing your content.

* The SEO community always praises the benefits of fresh content. However, there is such a thing as too much content, particularly as it applies per page. A page shouldn’t have more than around 750 words. Some designers recommend only 250 words per page. The specific amount of content will depend on your business and how text-based it is, but remember that short is sweet.

* Keep your navigation simple and well-documented throughout the site. Your site’s internal links are one of your best natural assets. As time goes by and fresh content is published, internal links can get a bit messy. A routine clean-up will help keep links flowing smoothly and straighten out old content.

*Stay focused on every page. It can be easy to ignore the needs of your more minor pages in favour of your major ones. Keywords should be implemented throughout the site in structure, with specific keywords for minor pages used on those pages, as well as minor pages supporting your major ones. It can be difficult to keep your SEO focused in this way over time, and you should keep the focus of each page in mind when reviewing your site.

* Anchored in-content links can support your keywords and ultimately your site’s ranking, but you should be subtle about it. There’s nothing clunkier than a page where every keyword is part of a hyperlink. A good SEO will use each keyword as a link only once a page, or twice if there is below-the-fold content. This is because constantly highlighted keywords are boring to read. The search engines are also suspicious of too-perfectly placed keywords.

* Know when to let go. Your old content will not always be of benefit to your site, and can sometimes weigh you down. It can be hard to let go of content you have carefully created to support your SEO strategy. Remember that your strategy will change over time to keep up with the fluctuations in the search world, and content optimised a year ago might not fit your current plan.
