In the world of Search Engine Optimisation – a lot of attention is usually placed on obtaining correct keyword densities – however a lot of companies overlook the importance of navigation. usually placing huge amounts of spam links onto the website in a footer or other ways of trying to minimise the impact – when in fact if catered for properly is not needed in the slightest. I am going to write about 3 methods of linking below – and within those I will write a couple of advantages and disadvantages
- Javascript Navigation:- Navigation wrote entirely in javascript is the bane of a SEO’s life – as the client usually is quite into the look of the navigation – how it fades in correctly and looks. This is the biggest advantage of Javascript Navigation – However the search engines can not effectively spider the website – causing huge problems with the site being indexed
- Flash. This has the same issues as Javascript – is very nice to look at -but not functional to the search engine spiders – even worse than the javascript – avoid!
- CSS and HTML: using the unordered (<ul> ) is really the only way to go with drop down navigation – you can build amazing lists which look stunning – and even use a touch of javascript to enhace the html where necessary!
So as you can see – whatever you need to do can be done within css, html and a touch of javascript – and be spiderable by the search engines
