In the world of Search Engine Optimisation - a lot of attention is usually placed on obtaining correct keyword densities - however a lot of companies overlook the importance of navigation. usually placing huge amounts of spam links onto the website in a footer or other ways of trying to minimise the impact - when in fact if catered for properly is not needed in the slightest. I am going to write about 3 methods of linking below - and within those I will write a couple of advantages and disadvantages

  1. Javascript Navigation:- Navigation wrote entirely in javascript is the bane of a SEO’s life - as the client usually is quite into the look of the navigation - how it fades in correctly and looks. This is the biggest advantage of Javascript Navigation - However the search engines can not effectively spider the website - causing huge problems with the site being indexed
  2. Flash. This has the same issues as Javascript - is very nice to look at -but not functional to the search engine spiders - even worse than the javascript - avoid!
  3. CSS and HTML: using the unordered (<ul> ) is really the only way to go with drop down navigation - you can build amazing lists which look stunning - and even use a touch of javascript to enhace the html where necessary!

So as you can see - whatever you need to do can be done within css, html and a touch of javascript - and be spiderable by the search engines
