Title tags can be a difficult part of search engine optimisation for businesses who attempt optimisation on their own. Too often, you will see a badly-written title within the search engine results pages. These may contain plenty of keywords, but they put the average user off because of their lack of basic human sense.

Title tags are important not just because search engines give a decent amount of weight to them. In all SEO, it is important to remember that the user is the ultimate recipient. While not all SEO techniques will be visible to your users, they all ultimately aim to attract users to your page. Your site’s title tags will play a very big part in this attraction.

The limited amount of space available within a title tag means they can be very difficult to write. Once you add in SEO requirements, title tags are some of the most difficult writing for your whole site, and this is why it is a good idea to consult your SEO company for title tags. You can talk to our experts at SEO Consult about writing your title tags. There may be instances when a hasty title tag is necessary. Here are some handy tips when composing your own title tags:

1. Keep in mind your keyword list for the page you’re titling. You should be able to fit these into the tag, but if you have a number of keywords for that page, you may need to decide on the most important.

2. Define the message of that page. A title cannot simply be a keyword list. Not only is it uninteresting, it’s spammy. Your title tag is an ideal opportunity to sell your site to the user browsing the search engine results page. Think about the main thing you want your user to get from that page, and focus on that as your central point for composition.

3. Finesse the keywords. It’s possible to blend several keywords together seamlessly in order to appeal on several levels. For example, a page whose main keywords are ‘designer clothing’ and ‘designer denim’ has an easy way out with ‘designer denim clothing’. Don’t forget that with multiple words in a keyword, it is possible to move things around a little.

4. Let ‘you’ come last. Your business or site name are important for your title tags, but should be placed at the end of the tag. Position is important for your keywords, and they should be as far to the left as possible.

5. Mix catchy phrasing with SEO methods. While your SEO is important in your title tags, your advertising message is as well. Both have to be compromised slightly in order to achieve a good title tag. The need to jostle for keyword position may mean that your sentence won’t read exactly as your English teacher taught you. For example, a good advertising message would be ‘15% off at Price Cutter’s designer denim sale!’, but a better title tag would be ‘Designer denim clothing sale – 15% off at Price Cutter.’
