What are meta tags? Simply put, they are the html tags (mostly unseen by users) inserted into the head code of each web page, which tell search engines about your website. Essentially they contain data about your content. In relation to Search Engine Optimisation, meta tags have long been used by both white hat and black hat SEO practitioners, which means that as a result of black hat abuse, search engines do not rely on them as they used to when it comes to ranking websites. However, the meta tags you use do still have an important role to play in SEO because they do provide useful information about your website to search engines. The important consideration now is that correct meta tags should be used as just a part of a carefully planned and orchestrated Search Engine Optimisation campaign, the information given in the meta tags being backed up by the good quality content of your website.

Meta tags play a role in showing some search engines how to describe your website in their results listings and therefore can have an influence on whether or not a visitor will choose your website to click on when they see the page of search results. The part that is visible to users of your website is the title tag. Whatever you place in this section is what appears at the top of the user’s browser and usually contains the title of your webpage as well as title for that page. Some browsers (such as Internet Explorer and Firefox) also add their own name to the end of your title tag to display which browser you are using. Making sure that your title tag gives an accurate and appropriate title for that page is very important, so that the search engines can use it to provide the most relevant results for their users.

The meta keyword tag can be very useful when considering Search Engine Optimisation because it allows you to provide search engine spiders with useful information which will help them to index your website. It helps to reinforce the important keywords within the content of your webpage but should not contain keywords which don’t really appear in your content. This is considered to be poor SEO because using irrelevant words won’t help build authority with search engines and so won’t help with your online visibility or ranking.

The meta desciption tag is used to describe the contents of the webpage to search engines in a succint manner. Some search engines use this tag when displaying your result as one of their results listing. The page title will be followed by a brief description of what can be found on that webpage.

So why do you need a tool to generate meta tags?

A good meta tag generator tool will take the key information about your webpage and generate relevant and appropriate tags so that search engines will be able to take the information they need from them. This means that search engines will be able to give clear and accurate results to their users when someone searches for your keywords.
